3、estmentsofprofessionallymanagedassetsgrewfrom$7trillionto$24.4trillionwhiletheshareoftheseassetsinvestedinsociallyresponsibleinvestmentsgrewfrom$639billionto$2.29trillion(SocialInvestmentFum[SIF]2006).Atthesametimelargei

4、nstitutionalinvestsmultistakeholdergroups–includingtheUNPrinciplesfResponsibleInvestmentprojecttheGlobalReptingInitiative(GRI)(2006)theCERESacoalitionofinvestspublicinterestgroups–havefocusedattentiononthematerialityofso

5、cialenvironmentalinfmationtoequityanalysis.Themagnitudegrowthofsociallyresponsibleinvesting(SRI)assetshasdrivenanequallydramaticgrowthintheneedfinfmation.TheobjectiveofthisstudyistodocumentthedisclosurepatternsofCSRbyU.S

6、.firms.InvestsarenottheonlyinterestedpartiesCSRactivityprovidesanincreasinginCanadacouldbeafunctionofthelesslitigiousreptingenvironmentfoundinCanadaasopposedtotheUnitedStates.Alnajjar(2000)examinedthe1990socialresponsibi

7、litydisclosuresofFtune500companies.Hefoundthatsizeprofitabilityaffectedthequalityquantityofdisclosure.Sincetherehavebeenanumberofchangesinthedisclosureenvironmentsince1990whenthedatawascollectedftheAlnajjar(2000)studysin

8、cetheCmierMagnan(1999)lookedatCanadianfirmsitisnotclearhowU.S.cpationsinthe2000shaverespondedtotheseincreaseddemsfCSRinfmation.FurthermepriresearchevaluatingthecontentofCSRdisclosureshasfocusedprimarilyonasinglereptingfm

9、at(generallytheannualreptmerecentlythecpatewebsite).Grayetal.(1995)hassuggestedthattheuseofasinglefmatfanalysispurposesmaybesignificantlylimitingtheunderstingthatcanbederivedaboutCSRdisclosurebehavi.Wetherefeextendthisli

10、teraturebyexplingtheentireidentifiablebodyofpublicdisclosuresmadebythesamplefirmsduring2004.Amajcontributionofourpaperisthedevelopmentofameanstoassessdirectlytheemphasisthatmanagementplacesondisseminatingagiventypeofinfm

11、ationpriresearchhaslargelyrelieduponfrequencyofdisclosurealoneasaproxyfemphasis.Inthispaperweevaluatethestateofreptingofsocialenvironmentalresponsibility(oftenknownascpatesocialresponsibilityCSR)reptingamongasampleofU.S.

12、firmstodeterminewhattypesofinfmationarebeingprovidedthroughwhatmeansoftransmission.Weperfmacontentanalysisonthedisclosuresmadebyasizeindustrystratifiedsampleof50publiclytradedU.S.firmsduring2004.Resultssuggestthatcompani

13、esdiscloseawidevarietyofCSRinfmationthroughmatedvoluntarymedia.Consistentwithpriresearchwefindsizeindustrydrivendifferencesindisclosurebehavi.OurresultssuggestdifferencesinthepatternvolumeofdisclosureinU.S.firmswhencompa
